Some of the hobby lathes came with nice compact chucks which work far better than, say, a 3 inch Buffalo universal chuck bolted to a small (but relatively heavy) adapter plate. This includes the chuck - if you have a choice, avoid putting a heavy chuck on something with a winky spindle. In short, avoid anything that might cause chatter. Generally the quality of the grind on the tool should have an inverse relation to the quality of the lathe - if it is a weak, spindly lathe prone to flex and wind-up, you need to have a really high quality high speed steel tool (not carbide) with a keen, well-stoned cutting edge, ground pretty much by the book for the material you are cutting. ![]()
